LINDER b KS 1872 The Linder Quarterly Fall 1995 James Linder rode with Jessie James My Grandfather, John Avery Linder, was a learned man, a school teacher, farmer, newspaper editor and Minister, from whom I learned much. On one of his visits to my father and mother's home, when I was about 15 years old, he remarker to me that his younger brother, James, had ridden with Jessie James. This startling statement immediately got my attention and I pressed him for details. James was at that time unmarried and lived at home with his parents Nathaniel and Susan (Furney) Linder., who were then living in Holt County, Missouri. A piece of the farm equipment had broken down and James was delagated to ride horseback to Kansas City, to obtain repair parts. On the return home, James met two other horsemen, Jessie James and a henchman, at a crossroads, and after introductions and passing the time of day. the three riders proceded on north to where James turned off west and the two strangers went on north. In retrospect, it is surmised that they were on their way to Northfield, Minnesota, where history tells us that Jessie James performed some of his infamous deeds. And so, James Linder, my Great Uncle, rode with Jessie James, not as a desperado nor bank robber, but rather as a trail companion, and, in all probability, this is one of my only claim to fame. J.
