John was born in TN and Melinda in OH. Eli, as a child, worked as a water boy for the Irish gandydancers who built the nearby railroads in the 19th century. They gave him the nickname "Pat" which stayed with him all his life and is inscribed on his gravestone. Eli married Letta Linder, daughter of James H. & Martha E. (Watson) Linder on Apr 11,1894 in Grant Co. They had three children, Gladys Lanore b. 1896, Laurel Wayne b. 1899, and Clarel Dane b. 1902. Eli was a lifelong farmer in Grant Co. and active in Jefferson Christian Church of which Jefferson Cemetery is a part. He maintained a farm and a separate home in Upland to which he retired at about age 80. Eli's daughter Gladys, married Earl Liepse and their daughter married Keith Stough of Kokomo.
