This site is dedicated to the memory of Conrad and Sarah Elizabeth NEWLAND BYERS. Conrad was an early resident, and town trustee of Shepherdstown, Jefferson County, Va. It is unknown when and where he and his wife Sarah Elizabeth NEWLAND were married. The earliest records for the family are found in the records of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Shepherdstown. Their first child, Johannes, was born 6 Jan. 1778 and was Baptised in Hagerstown, Maryland. His sponsors were Johanes ULAND and wife Elisabeth. The remainder of their 12 children were born and christened in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Shepherdstown. The birth dates range from 1782-1801.
Conrad was a whitesmith, a metal worker, and he was deposed on the 29th of October, 1785. Conrad Byers made oath that in October or November,1785, he put hands on two brass or copper cocks for [John]Rumsey, some springs for opening and shutting them, two pistons, and some flanches; and that he understood that they there for the steam-boat. (John Rumsey built the first steam boat and thus, Conrad Byers assisted in it's creation.)
Conrad died in 1805 and Sarah in 1824.
A number of their many descendants remained in the Shepherdstown area for many generations, some went to Ohio, and others to Illinois.
This site is a venue for sharing information and photographs, of some of the early descendants of Conrad and Sarah Elizabeth NEWLAND BYERS.
