      1968, (originally published 1904), Volume 2, Page 82.

(Note: Raymond B. Clark (born 1927) was/is Editor of Maryland
Genealogical Bulletin, and has authored books/pamphlets).

RES: Original proprieter, Shepherd's Fold, Queen Annes County, Maryland.

      OCC: Planter, Attorney.

REL: Member of Church of England.

Francis Shepherd was a Planter who acquired many tracts of land by original
surveys or by purchase, some of which he sold to other settlers. He was
one of the early Protestants in Maryland, loyal to the King and to Lord
Baltimore in his government of the Colony. He was a signer of the Petition
of 18 Nov 1689, to the King, complaining of John Coade's creating tumult
and mutiny in the Colony and taking it over. They requested the return
of Lord Baltimore. He served on juries from 1680 regularly through 1684.

      Extract from will:
Talbot County, drawn 5 Mar 1691, proved 21 Mar 1692.
To dau. Mary - 200 acres, 1/2 of "Shepherds Fortune", and 200 acres,
      1/2 of "Shepherds Forest".
To son William - residue of "Shepherds Fortune" and "Shepherds Forest".
to dau. Eliza - 300 acres, "Redoubt" on Red Lyon Branch.
to youngest dau. Ann - 300 acres, part of "Shepherds Foalds".
to Ann Evans, dau. of sister (not named), residue of "Shepherds Foalds".
to brother (note: this was probably brother-in-law in modern terms)
Robert Nooris, executor, 1/2 of tract of land in dispute between
testator (Francis Shepherd) and Nicholas Clouds.
      to John Powder, 200 acres.
In event all children dying during minority or without issue, estate to
pass to Ann Evans, and in turn to children of brother Robert Nooris.
      Overseers: Jno. Whitinton, Jonas Greenwood.
Testators: Mary Sherrin, Jno. Powder, Jonas Greenwood.

The will of Edward Smith, St. Pauls Parish, Kent County, Maryland, 1700,
leaves 2000 acres on Chester River, formerly belonging to Francis Shepherd.

Eliza Shepherd was a testator for John Ponder, 2 Feb 1702.
Elizabeth Shepherd married Joseph James, 31 Aug 1710, St. Peters Parish,
      Talbot County, Maryland.

There was a Francis Shepherd, wife Hannah, in service 1680. (This was
a method of obtaining transport to America; after service for a period
of years, the person in service was free and often obtained land).
(Reference: The Early Settlers of Maryland, Gust Skordas, Baltimore,
      1984, - Liber WC2, Folio 328, 329).

From Thelma Shepherd, April 1994, she states that Francis and his wife
were released from 5 years service in 1679, at the same time as was
John Ponder. The theory is that they were in service to William
Tilghman, with whom Francis Shepherd went in partnership for his first
known land purchase. Mrs. Shepherd, further, has a theory that the
parents of Francis were William Shepherd and Mary.

There are some indistinct clues that Francis Shepherd might have been
a member of the Shepherd family in Barbadoes.
