SAMUEL LINDER OF IOWA by Helen H. Porker
Samuel Linder was one of the nine children of Daniel Linder, and a great-grandson 0 f Simon Linder who came to Phi ladelphia in 1733 from Germany. Samuel was born in Hardin County, Kentucky on 16 November 1795 and in about 1822 married Elizabeth Bunger, who was born in Virginia on 11 March 1802.
They migrated west by way of Monroe County, Indiana (1831) and Marshall County, Illinois (ca 1850) and on to KnoxTownship, Clarke County, Iowa in 1853, where they finally settled. The first church in the community was in their log cabin.
Samuel and Elizabeth had twelve children:
Mary b 20 Mar 1822: d 2 Oct 1905
Henry B. b 27 Mar 1824: d 7 Sep 1900
Sarah b 19 Feb 1826: d 7 May 1896
Jacob M. b 24 Jon 1828: d 16 Sep 1889
Samuel b. 9 Feb 1830: d 4 Feb 1901
David K. b 25 Mar 1832: d 1 Apr 1881
Andrew K. b 20 Apr 1834: d
Joseph D. b 15 May 1836: d 27 Aug 1863
Martha b 28 Mar 1838: d
Susan b 2 Feb 1840: d
Elizabeth b 1840 (?)
William S b 1844 (?)
Most of the children were farmers or married farmers and David's wife, Mary Officer, was one of the first teachers in the area. Joseph served in Company K of the Iowa 18th Infantry during the War Between the States and died young of an illness contracted during the war. Jacob was active in county affairs and held different county offices. Mary and Henry B. moved to Nebraska and others to South Dakota and northern Iowa.
Samuel's wife Elizabeth died 1 February 1876 and he died 18 Apr 1881. They are both buried at lacelle, Iowa, near their home.
As far as is known, Samuel's two oldest surviving great-grandchildren are Mrs. Rosa linder Dutton Sanders, age 91, who still lives in Clarke County, and Mrs. Lela Sanders Graves, age 90, who lived in Clarke County until recently when she moved to a retirement home in West Des Moines, Iowa, to be near her daughter. Younger relatives wish they had the sharp, alert minds these older cousins stili possess!
